So, what's the difference? And more to the point, which is best?
When you stop and think about it, both Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Google Adwords are both trying to achieve the same thing - a 'click through' to your site, from a search engines result page!
SEOSEO is a recognised method of achieving a high position within a search engine such as Google. This is achieved by fine tuning the code of your site and then optimizing the text content to carefully put more emphasis on chosen ‘key phrases’ within the body text of each page. Generally, one web page is optimised per ‘key phrase’. Also, because different search engines rank sites differently to each other, it can often be a good idea to tailor different pages for different search engines. Because SEO is reliant on the search engines picking up on the newly adjusted code, then refreshing their search indexes, SEO can be a lengthy process. Typically you can wait between 3 to 6 weeks before seeing the results of the latest round of adjustments to your site. A search result listing is usually considered as a 'non-fee paying' position, but is it? Well, if you leave your site to chance, yes it is. Otherwise unless you undertake the constant tweaking and monitoring yourself, you will still have to pay someone to do the SEO work for you! Another important consideration is that with SEO there are no guarantees of a fixed high position. This is because there are always new sites coming online and more importantly, your competitors are probably employing SEO to improve their sites over yours. Even the search engines themselves, from time to time, change the way they rank websites to improve the accuracy of their results. So what was top yesterday, won't necessarily be top today! The result of all this means that your ranking may never be constant, which will lead to constant monitoring and tweaking of the site by your SEO service provider to maintain a high position. Google AdwordsFirst of all this method is pretty much instant! As soon as your campaign is live, you have the potential to place your advert at the top of page one, for any of the keywords or phrases you specify. Why just the 'potential to'? Well, this is because like with everything in life, it all comes down to money and how much you are willing to 'bid' for a 'click-through' to your site. Some people are scared off from this method of online marketing because they fear it will run away with their bank balance and cost them a small fortune, but this is not the case. You start by setting a daily maximum budget. This way you are guaranteed not to spend over this limit on any given day. Obviously if you constantly reach this budget, people must be visiting your site and so hopefully sales or enquiries should reflect this. It is important to understand that it only costs if someone clicks through to your site from your advert. And as your advert will only appear when a user searches for one of your identified keywords or phrases, when they then click through to your site, you already know they are interested in whatever products or services you offer because that's what they were searching for! With a little effort you can quickly identify an accurate list of keyphrases/words that will more accurately target your chosen audience. Other key advantages to an Adwords campaign include:
